Pressure Ulcer on Heel

Pressure ulcers are areas of damaged skin caused by staying in one position for too long. They commonly develop over bony parts of the body that do not have much tissue to pad them, such as on the heels. The ulcer forms as a result of constant and prolonged pressure exerted on this bony area of the body. The following are risk factors for heel pressure ulcers:

  • bed or chair confinement
  • inability to move
  • poor nutrition and hydration
  • medical conditions affecting circulation
  • decreased sensory perception
